It's the law. It's also good care.
Under the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992, employers must provide an eye and eyesight test for screen users who ask for one, and glasses if they're needed for screen work. SideUp makes it simple to offer, and tax-free under section 320A ITEPA 2003.

No Income Tax or National Insurance for you or your team when the conditions are met.

What it covers
Eye and eyesight tests for screen users, plus glasses or lenses the test shows are needed specifically for screen work.
The condition
It has to be available to every employee who counts as a screen user.
SideUp's role
Pays the optician directly, with every payment tracked.
Everyday glasses
No special screen prescription
Taxable
What it means
Glasses for general use are a taxable benefit, even if they're also worn at a screen.
One pair for both?
Only the screen-use part of the prescription is tax-free, so the cost needs to be split.
SideUp's role
Not covered as a tax-free benefit.
Keep the receipts itemised. Separate costs for the test and the screen prescription make the split easy to show.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about DSE Eyecare in the UK.
What is DSE Eyecare?
Eye tests, and glasses if needed, for employees who use screens as part of their job, funded by your company.
Who is eligible?
Employees who use display screen equipment daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more, count as DSE users under the regulations, whether they work in the office or at home. They're entitled to a test when they ask for one.
Is DSE Eyecare tax-free?
Yes. Under section 320A ITEPA 2003, eye tests and screen glasses are exempt from Income Tax and National Insurance when they're required under the DSE Regulations and made available to all the employees who need them.
What counts as screen glasses?
Glasses or lenses prescribed specifically for screen work. Everyday glasses without a special screen prescription are a taxable benefit, and if one pair covers both, only the screen-use part is tax-free.
Can employees book their own test and be reimbursed?
Yes. Since 6 April 2026, reimbursing employees for eye tests and screen glasses is also tax-free. With SideUp, employees can simply pay with their card instead.
Do we have to offer it?
If your team uses screens, the regulations already require you to provide an eye test on request. SideUp makes that duty easy to meet, and tax-free.
How does SideUp handle it?
Employees pay the optician with their SideUp card, within the budget you set. Every payment is tracked automatically, so you can always show what was covered.
